The Year of Jubilee

Today’s Scripture “Be assured that I will send my blessing for you in the sixth year, so the land will produce a crop large enough for three years” (Leviticus 25:21).

  The year of Jubilee was the next year after seven years of seven (49 years). In other words it occurred every 50 years. It was a year when the land was to rest and the land reverted back to its original owner. To refrain from working the land this year required a great deal of trust, since the land was to rest in both the 49th and 50th years. Yet, in response to their act of trust, God makes a promise to bless the people abundantly to provide for their needs during that time.

  The Year of Jubilee is a picture of the gospel: that good news is preached to the poor, debts are paid and completely forgiven. Salvation is a “Jubilee” experience for us!
