“Phinehas turned my anger away… so I stopped destroying all Israel” (Numbers 25:11).

To Find (look for):

  1. What was the sin committed in Numbers 25?

  2. Who thrust the spear (Num 25:8) and how did God respond (Num 25:11)?

To Mind (key point): Because Balaam could not earn his reward money by pronouncing a curse, he turned to another means. Revelation 2:14 tells us he showed Balak how to trip them up: teach them to sin by eating food offered to idols and participating in their idol worship. This sin provoked the anger of God and cost 24,000 Israelites their lives. Had it not been for the great intercessor, Phinehas, none would have been spared (Num 25:11).

To Bind (apply to our lives): Balaam preached the doctrine of compromise and it tripped Israel up time and time again. The cry of the world – even today – is to be tolerant, accepting of the sin around us. Do you allow the world to entice you to compromise?
